Depersonalization - It Does Not Last Forever,
Depersonalization Can Be Treated!
The first question that probably strikes your mind once you
become depersonalized is "what did I do wrong?" The answer is nothing
as it is hard to predict and analyze your genetic predispositions beforehand.
Depersonalization is usually triggered with cannabis or other psychedelics use
(my case), but patients with anxiety disorders often report feelings of
detachment as well.
What I have found out over the course of my
depersonalization (10 months) is that it is a condition that is not permanent
and the recovery can be aided in many different ways:
1. Analyze your trigger - try to think about what triggered
your depersonalization and/or what makes it worse and avoid these substances.
(usually these include: alcohol, tobacco, drugs (prescription as well))
2. Ignore it - This
is the hardest step, but gretly boost your recovery once mastered. You need to
learn to think in such way that all the negative thoughts will be ignored and
paid less attention as these are main sources of anxiety which is the true
cause of depersonalization. There are many great books and web-sites teaching
individuals to overcome anxiety if you think you can not handle it by yourself.
3. Give it time - do
not expect to recover over night, the recovery is gradual with small but
rewarding outcomes over time. It usually takes couple of months (from 4-12) to
recover if you avoid the triggers.
4. Exercise/Do something productive - At first you will most
likely not enjoy the activities, but in the long run you will find more and
more joy in them. Important is that they take your mind off your
depersonalization and connect you with reality. Jogging is a great way of
taking your mind off it and it promotes production of serotonin too (a
neurotransmitter essential for good mood and learning).
These are the basics that helped me deal with my
depersonalization, believe me it gets much better if you are patient. There are
many great guides out there addressing deperosnalization sufferers so look them
up and try which method works best for you. However try not to spend hours
every day researching depersonalization, obsessing about it just makes it
worse. You are not crazy and never will be, otherwise you wouldn't be concerned
about your condition, its just anxiety. Remember the majority recovers and so
will you!
